Guadalupe Emergency Interim Housing | San Jose, California
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS:
- Guerdon had the opportunity to construct a quick-build interim housing project in San Jose, California to house individuals experiencing homelessness.
- The project was developed in collaboration with the city and aimed to address the growing homeless crisis in the area.
- The housing site, known as the Guadalupe Emergency Interim Housing, is situated on a former San Jose Police Department parking lot.
OVERVIEW:
The project consists of 16 prefabricated structures and offers 76 housing units for homeless residents. The site features various amenities, including a shared kitchen, laundry rooms, a community room, bathrooms, outdoor common areas, space for pets, security offices, fencing, and a smoking area. It is designed to provide safety, stability, and dignity to its occupants.
The construction of the Guadalupe Emergency Interim Housing took approximately six months and cost around a quarter of the expenses typically associated with traditional apartments. The project was funded through a combination of federal American Rescue Plan funds, City of San Jose Housing Department funds, and Homeless Housing, Assistance, and Prevention (HHAP) funds from the state. Additionally, community partners, such as Destination: Home, All Home, and Housing Trust Silicon Valley, provided financial support.
The Guadalupe Emergency Interim Housing site aims to serve as a transitional solution while helping homeless residents gain access to permanent housing. It also includes a transitional employment program, similar to the San José Bridge program, where residents can work with local employment-based non-profits to improve their job skills and rebuild their resumes.
The project has been well-received by housing advocates, elected officials, and the community. It is seen as a step forward in addressing the homelessness crisis in San Jose. However, some concerns have been raised about the site’s proximity to the police department, as it may deter certain individuals from seeking housing or resources due to past tense interactions. Advocates stress the importance of giving the homeless community a voice and ensuring that interim housing projects prioritize residents’ freedom and well-being.
Overall, the Guadalupe Emergency Interim Housing project represents an innovative and cost-effective approach to providing temporary shelter and support for homeless individuals in San Jose, with the ultimate goal of helping them transition to permanent and stable housing.
