Vignes Village | Los Angeles, California
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS:
- Guerdon delivered 100 housing units to site within 60 days of the initial contract.
- The modules were installed temporarily, getting heads-on-beds as fast as possible, but have the versatility to be relocated in the future or moved to permanent foundations as housing demands change.
- CARES Act funding covered a major portion of the project, but would not have been awarded if it weren’t for the speed modular methods offered; using any other method, the project would not have been built fast enough to be eligible for the funds.
OVERVIEW:
This transitional housing project for individuals experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles, CA showcases the modular benefits of Affordability, Flexibility, & Speed. Brought together by VESTA Modular, under Bernards as the General Contractor, three manufactures worked overtime to deliver modules under extreme time constraints. Two shipping container permanent structures (not built by Guerdon), 100 units of relocatable housing, and an administrative building, all delivered in a matter of months.
VESTA Modular contracted with Guerdon to deliver 100 beds (20 modules, each containing 5 housing units) and an administrative building produced by Palomar out of Texas. The 9 module, 6,000 square-foot administrative building includes:
- Dining Facilities
- Laundry Services
- Support Service Offices
- Meeting Rooms
- Administrative Offices
SPEED
The project was initiated on Sept. 29, 2020 with a motion by L.A. County Supervisor Hilda Solis and adopted by the Board of Supervisors.
“The goal is (to) house people as quickly as you can,” said Sarah Dusseault, a commissioner with the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority who advised Hilda Solis on the project. “Get people into housing right away, even if it’s going to be operated as temporary.”
FLEXIBILITY
The housing modules Guerdon delivered to site before the end of the year 2020 were installed as a temporary option to get heads-on-beds as fast as possible. The modules have the versatility to be relocated in the future or moved to permanent foundations as housing demands change.
AFFORDABILITY
Cares Act funding played a major role in getting the project off the ground, allowing officials to avoid some of the time-consuming and limiting ways in which the county typically acquires funding. Without the speed of modular, funding would not have been a possibility; the project would not have been built fast enough to be eligible for the funds.
